Films and IMDB

Sometimes films make me want to look at IMDB to see what others think of it. The Squid And The Whale was one of these. I hated this film, it was hugely pretentious and certain parts (you’ll know which parts if you’ve seen it) made me feel almost like a paedophile, which is never a good thing. Everyone who reviewed it on IMDB seemed to be just as pretentious as the film and the whole thing really irked me.

One thing I really don’t get about IMDB reviewers however, is that they say films aren’t true to life. Isn’t that one of the points about films?? That they are a bit of escapism from real life? Last night I watched Lars And The Real Girl which I loved. Just a story of a few months in the life of the people in a small town somewhere in America (or possibly Canada). Obviously this isn’t a normal few months otherwise it would probably make a slightly boring film. This morning I went onto IMDB to see what others thought about it and they said it was silly and not true to life. Of course it wasn’t true to life you idiots!!! The human race probably isn’t that nice!!! There is a tiny little part of me that likes to think it could, or possibly has happened. I’m sure it has, not unnecessarily with exactly the same subject matter (doll), but I’m sure there are towns and villages everywhere that have helped a person through some horrible time in their life like they did in this film.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about then I suggest you watch this film, it was great.

Books, TV, Fillum and Music.

I am excited to say that I have just purchased Jeremy Clarkson’s ‘The World According To Clarkson’ in a Penguin Classic cover, it’s an odd thing to see. I shan’t be reading it (again) for a while as I have masses of reading to do in a very short time, my first OU assignment is due on the 5th October and I haven’t read anywhere near enough!

Also I have just watched ‘Stuart: A Life Backwards’ and I loved it. We had a locum pharmacist in at work the other day and she questioned why our addicts became addicts, why they put themselves in such a dismal position and live in such depravity. I said that a lot of them were in an even worse place beforehand and this program showed this brilliantly. For some it’s almost as if heroin addiction is part of the healing process as the addict will be more likely to get the sort of help they need, whereas someone who is just ‘bonkers’ can easily slip through the net. I wish I could ask our addicts why they started but I can’t, I can only find out if they offer this information to me. When they do it’s eye opening.

A couple of days ago I watched ‘Reign Over Me’ with Adam Sandler taking the lead. He was a dentist with a beautiful family and everything to live for. Then 9/11 happens and his wife, three daughters and dog are on one of the planes that crashes into the Twin Towers. He gives up dentistry and becomes a drummer in a band who re-models his kitchen every few months. People who don’t really know him think he’s crazy, but it is just his way of handling the grief he feels for losing his whole family in such a terrible way. Don Cheadle plays the ’straight’ man as Sandlers ex college room mate who helps him let his feelings out. I loved this film because it makes you understand that people feel in different ways and hurt in different ways too. It was also nice to see the male emotions coming out.

Watching this film made me want to listen to Quadrophenia again (as the final track ‘Reign o’ Me’ was the song on the end credits) and Pete Townsend really had it sussed then. He’ll always be a very bizarre man, but he got teenage angst spot on with this album. Classic.

Tired…

Tired of not having water, but thankfully it should be back on tomorrow for flushing and bathing use. Billy just told me that he is having a bath in a min, but I have to wait. When tomorrow comes and I hear that sound of cisterns filling up I shall be in the bath like a shot and stay in it for some time… although not too long as the water will still be a bit dodgy.

In other news I got the preparatory material for my OU course. I am really looking forward to this as my sister is doing it too. This means competition which in turn means that we will be doing good work (hopefully). At work my boss is on holiday and I feel like I’m running the place, which I suppose is good training for when I do actually run the place. Having just one day off a week is very draining though, I wanted a lie in yesterday but also didn’t want to waste the day. What is a young girl to do? Well, I stayed in bed till 9.30, that’s what I did!

I have to go shopping on Wednesday as I have a pirate party to go to on Saturday. It’s meant to be on a boat but there still may be a chance that the water is too high so it may be moved to a pub nearby. I have decided to use the dresses I made for re-enactment as the costume as they are wenchy/pirate type dresses. I need to add stripy tights, bandanna, big earrings, eye patch and cutlass to this equation.

Last night I watched Hairspray and I have to say I loved it and smiled all the way through. Gonna watch the last episode of Jekyll in a minute, I am sure there will be less smiling whilst watching that.

*Edit* I watched the last episode of Jekyll and I did actually smile. It was very good, a tad OTT at times but overall a very enjoyable series. I’m glad I watched the whole thing.
